Dr. Owen
F. Marsh (realistic
style)
This was the first
time I drew Owen realistically. It was a major turning point and
I did this because I was starting the alternate ending to Innocence
Lost. I had started work on The
Last Holy Knight.
The following will reveal lots of spoilers so be warned. Last
Holy Knight was exactlly what I'd been working up all these years
for. Owen would finally get his fire. But first I had to get around
the problem of him having been killed by Frink. The answer was
alternate ending.
In The Last Holy
Knight Owen gets his wish and finally kills Frink himself. It's
the moment he's been waiting for his whole life. Now he's killed
the whole Frink family and Owen finds himself with nowhere to
focus his anger. For years his life has revolved around out doing
Frink and now that he has Owen finds himself rather lost. He doesn't
miss Frink so don't think that and he doesn't regret what he did.
He often remenisces about the kill. But it's the change that is
hard on him. It's something he soon gets over when he hits another
major life changing event.
When Thanatos hands
Owen an unknown sample that he wants him to identify is when Owen's
life goes down hill. Turns out Thanatos did know what it was but
wanted Owen to do the dirty work and find if he could use it to
make money. The sample was a piece of Thagirion's
molten flesh. The skin of the Devil. It reacted to Owen's dark
soul and latched on to him. It burned into him and set the whole
lab on fire. Owen was rescued from the blaze and amazingly had
no injuries. He was sent home in good health. What Owen didn't
know was that he HAD died and had been given a new life. The next
day when he read an article in the paper about the late Prof.
Frink he became furious and the paper burst into flames right
in his hands. This really scared him and he noticed a strange
light on the walls. He tried torun from it but could not. At last
running past a mirror he found out that HE was the light source
and that his hair was on fire. He ran for some water and tried
to put out the flames only to find that when he tired it was excruciating.
He realized he was stuck with his fire and that if he ever put
it out he would die. The sample had rooted itself to Owen's emotions
and the fire was now truely a part of him.
After this Owen
lost much of his cocky ego. He figured his life was ruined. He
could no longer sleep in a bed, he could not enter buildings without
setting off the sprinklers and he could never work as a scientist
again. He believed because of his fire he'd lost some of his good
looks and thought he'd become a freak. He did not become depressed
over this, only more enraged. He's not one to give up without
a fight. Thanatos still hadn't told him the truth and Owen wanted
answers so he set himself up for testing. It was during this time
that his long lost brother from over seas found him.
Owen is angry that
his brother has walked in on his experiment and ruined hours of
work. His younger brother has a different reaction upon first
seeing Owen. Owen is less than thrilled and finds him to be an
annoyance at first. He later gets used to it because his bro ends
up admiring him and feeding his ego with compliments. Owen's brother
is electricity based and the two talk about their respective powers.
By now Owen has learned he can control his fire. Once more Owen's
moment of happiness is short lived when he finds himself attacked
by Thagirion. He's completely confused with this creature would
come after him when all he was doing was practicing with his new
powers out in an open field. The demon claims that Owen stole
his fire and he wants it back. Owen would love nothing more than
to give it back but he can not without losing his life. Thagirion
would have no problem taking his life and attempts it but Owen
escapes.
It's at this point
that Owen realizes he's in serious danger and needs to protect
himself. His fire is no defense against the demon that IS fire.
He now understands that it's not just any fire he whields but
it's Hell Fire. To protect it Owen creates a helmet out of clear
metal that can withstand his immense heat. But like real fire
his flames still need to breath, so he attaches an oxygen supply
to them. Not only does this provide defense for him but he can
pretty much lead a normal life now. But he still needs an offense.
He knows we won't always be able to run from the devil. So Owen
creates his clear metal sword Steel Blazer.
The picture of Owen
posing with the sword is unusual because he hates his fire. This
is one of the few times you see him happy and proud of his new
ability. The picture of him leaping of the building was the first
time he discovered he could make fire wings. They don't function
in the sense of true wings and served basically as a parachute
for him. He landed hard and was hurt from the fall. It took a
great deal of effort for him to produce them and to keep them
open until he could reach safety. The following to pics I made
because I thought it would be neat to see what Owen would look
like in a fighting video game.
Here he is with
and without his fire. Not bad but he's too pleasant for my taste.
I couldn't capture that arrogance about him. The nose is all wrong.
I did finally manage to make him in a game. I completely flipped
out when I got Day of Reckoning 2 for Gamecube and made all of
my characters. Here are the pics of Owen.

This was incredible! He's
perfect. It's Owen and look!! He even has his fire. He's got all
his qualities and I gave him all the dirty moves.

Here's his side view. I
love it! His nose is almost perfect. I couldn't figure out how
to give him that ridge at the top. But other than that he's great.
I love his eyes. They are as icy here as they are in my drawings.

And this is his win pose
after he does a little cocky strutting. Head back nose in the
air I'm better than you attitude that is Owen. Gotta love it!
I should mention that while
I was writing The Last Holy Knight is when I came up with Owen's
middle name. The whole story of his name is quite interesting
actually. I'm a fan of paleontology, the study of ancient life.
His first name is taken from Sir Richard Owen the man who coined
the name Dinosauria. Marsh was taken from Othneil Charles Marsh,
who was in a bitter rivalry with Edward Drinker Cope. I love rivalries.
I thought it fitting since Owen would be in a similar rivalry
with Frink. His middle name is an interesting story. I wasn't
looking for a middle name, I don't give my characters middle names,
but one night I had a dream and my mind actually told me, "Owen's
middle name HAS TO BE Fairfield." I couldn't believe it!
Fairfield was the middle name of another paleontologist Henry
Fairfield Osborne who was a good friend of Cope's. Too funny how
they are all intertwined, plus it's a fancy middle name that works
well with the others. Even abbreviated it sounds good, Owen F.
Marsh.
