Dr. Owen Fairfield Marsh

Owen Marsh is a character I developed back in 1996. He's been through several stories and in each one has changed substantially along the way. I found myself placing him in so many different situations that I came to realize that he was one of my favorite characters and definitely one of my best despite all his horrible short comings. He's one of my most developed and complex personality wise. Owen is a villain in every sense of the word. This site is for the purpose of showing his history, development and art. I have his drawings and stories scattered around on different sites. One of the goals of this place is to bring all of those together under one roof.

Back in 1996 I had just become majorly obsessed with Godzilla fandom. It was an easy step since I had always been so much into dinosaurs and paleontology. My husband whom I had recently started dating then is the one that really got me into the whole kaiju craze. I came up with an idea for a comic book called Dawn of Destruction. It would feature my favorite monster Destroyah. The story was about her being shrunk and placed in a lab to be studied by two scientists. One was my good guy (actually good girl) and the other would be my bad guy. Both would fight over who would get the right to study Destroyah and their methods were naturally very different. So I set about creating my bad guy. I knew from the start that his name would have to be Owen. I'd taken it from the paleontologist who'd coined the term Dinosauria, one Sir Richard Owen. I had an idea in my mind of what I wanted Owen to look like. He was tall, pale, had cornsilk blonde hair and piercing blue eyes like ice. I still hadn't really learned how to draw people and getting him out of my head and onto paper would not be easy. I made a few doodles and would erase them right away hating how he kept turning out. Finally I drew one that was almost right. Furious that he was still not what I wanted I scribbled some lines on his head and gave him fire.

It wasn't meant to be serious. It was just me venting my frustration at my lack of skill, so I took it out on my character. Like most of my other good works my best creations come out of fits of rage. I looked down at the paper and actually liked what I saw. I drew a few more of him with fire on his head. Not bad! Here for the first time on the net are those original doodles of Dr. Marsh.

Unfortunately Dawn of Destruction didn't call for him having any fire. I had to put that idea off. Dawn of Destruction turned out so nice...story wise anyway (my art still left much to be desired back then, mostly on the way I drew humans) that I decided to make it into a trillogy. DOD2 would feature Owen returning with a new monster and an enemy for Destroyah to fight. He was so angry at what she had done to him while she was small that he became obsessed with revenge. By now his personality was begining to develope nicely even this early on. I knew he was, vain, hateful, vengful and obsessive. That story didn't have much plot. It was meant to be just one big battle for Destroyah and she would have eventually defeated Owen's monster fueling his hate for her further. These are a few scenes of the original Owen from Dawn of Destruction.

DOD2 was never finished. I only made four pages or so of that. DOD3 never made it to paper. That's the one that would have eventually featured Owen with fire for the first time. After a lab accident he finally got the fire I'd always wanted him to have. He set off to find Destroyah and take his revenge. What he hadn't counted on was her oxygen destroying properties which rendered his flames useless. Again he was furious that his powers had been of no help. Well that was around the turn of the century and I put Owen away for a while and began to work on other things.

It was in 2002 that I had gotten two Simpsons games. One was Simpsons Wrestling and the other was Simpsons Road Rage for GameCube. I had already gone through a Simpson craze back in the early 90s when I was in high school and these games rekindled it. I began to focus on my favorite character Professor Frink. My mind came up with this scene that I knew would become the final scene of an epic story I was about to write. I had to draw it out right away. So I came up with the picture of Professor Frink standing on the hood of his flying car clutching his death ray floating over a burning city. Now Frink on the show is a nice guy and a push over. My drawing showed him so dark and menacing. I began to wonder what could push such a kind hearted man over the edge? I knew if I could figure this out I'd have a great story.

The answer was pretty simple: An abusive obsessive rival. So I set about creating a rival for Frink. I came up with my new character at the time: Mr. Thanatos. I looked at Thanatos and realized he was just too mean and scary to be Frink's direct rival. For a moment I was at a loss. Creating new characters has never been my forte, but then I realized I already had the perfect rival all along. I had Owen! I was so happy to bring him back after not having used him in years. He desrved a much better role than what he'd had in Dawn of Destruction. Still this story didn't call for any fire. So I set about Simpsonizing Owen and came up with this.

Wow what a difference! This was just what I needed. I still hadn't learned to draw humans but the Simpson style wasn't exactly human and it let me get away with things that I hadn't quite learned yet. I loved that picture and at last he looked like the cocky handsome man he was supposed to be. He was quite the stark contrast to Frink who was rather homely looking. So I wrote the story Innocence Lost and it was in this that Owen's ture nature finally developed and I really got to know the character on a personal level. I'm gonna be giving away lots of spoilers so if you haven't read the story do so as I consider it to be the best thing I've writen so far.

So what can I say about Owen's personality so far? Owen Marsh is a stuck up jerk. He's good looking, he knows it and he thinks he's better than anyone else. He is a very nasty person you do not want to be around. He is incredibly cocky, stuck up and arrogant, but he can back up most of his claims because his is extremely intelligent. Tall standing at 6'3" and thin (165 lbs) Owen is very handsome and he makes it clear to everyone that he knows this. His eyes are a bright aqua blue and one of his most out standing features apart from the fire he later attains on his hair. He'll do anything to get ahead and won't think twice about putting others down. His temper is extremely short and his hate is as big as his ego which makes him very dangerous. He knows seven languages all self taught. Those are English, Spanish, German, Greek, Latin, Italian and Chinese. He doesn't care for Asian languages but only picked up Chinese because it's the hardest language in the world and he wanted to prove he'd mastered it. He's currently working on teaching himself Russian. The man is brilliant and does know his science very well, but he flipped out when he met Frink years back in elementary school. The thought that there might actually be someone out there whom was just as good or even better than him drove him insane. Because of this he hated Frink and everything he was or did. From the moment they met, he became Frink's rival in the sciences and for Caroline's love. She had two princes to choose from. Owen is not like other nerds in the fact that he's cocky and good looking and aware of it. He recieved his doctorate in physics and engineering but prefers to be called by his first name or his first name and his title ; Dr. Owen. Owen is obsessive, explosive and short tempered. It is rare when he can control his anger.

The following are the drawings I did for Innocence Lost featuring Owen. Click for full size and description. These are linked to the Innocence Lost site so be sure to hit the Back button on your browser to return here.

Owen dies at the end of Innocence Lost. You'll find I just wasn't able to live with that.

The following are drawings I made for the "Back Stage of Innocence Lost". Whenever I work on a story I always see it in my mind as a movie both the scenes and the actual directing. This story had been so dark that it did need a little something to lighten up the mood. I did make a lot of readers cry. So I drew all the characters as though they were actors and were all actually good friends. These are the pics that featured Owen. You'll find it very different from what happened in the story almost to the point of disbelife.
