Author's Notes

Those of you that are familiar with my other works know who that is in the picture above. He's one of my many and beloved personas. So, how did I come up with this mess? The Delinquents weren't the first to catch my eye when I saw the movie. For that matter neither was Chick. I was all about Doc when I first saw the film. Slowly I became a fan of Chick's through the PS2 version of the Cars game. After playing the game to death I began to enjoy the plot point that Chick had hired these four bad boys to steal from Mack's trailer. I'd also been talking to some other fans (mostly fan girls) and was disgusted by the trend that I had seen happen to so many villains. It was now happening with Cars. That was that these folks are delusional enough to think that the villains aren't bad or aren't REALLY so bad. Well guess what? You don't have to be a murderer to be BAD. Chick and the Delinquents are definitely bad guys and I figured I'd make this site and write this story focusing on the Delinquents to show just how bad they can really be if given the chance.

After Chick the third car that slowly captured my attention was Boost. Of the four he became my favorite because he was the leader and just came off as the worst of the bunch. I could tell that he could be a real nasty SOB. He isn't the type of person you'd like to meet in real life. I love him but I'm smart enough to know that if he were real I would not be able to stand him. I was convinced he was bad and would drop his friends like a bad habit if he had to after what I saw in the film and game.

This scene from the game really got to me. This happens after McQueen beats them in a race. The other three are sad that they lost, but Boost is furious and has a down right dangerous look to his face. He convinces the others to be angry as well, tells McQueen that it isn't over (in other words he plans to get revenge like any true bad guy would) then takes off with his pals on his side. I love how he completely changed their mood from sad to mad and made them take his side. In the end credits of the movie when Sheriff catches them for speeding the other three look annoyed but again Boost is the only one that looks murderous. That aspect of Boost's personality became the center point of the way he behaves in the story and because of this I feel I have done a good job of keeping him in character.

One thing that was challenging when I wrote this was writing their speech. Good grief they speak in that horrible hip-hop slang that I detest so much. It was painful to purposely ruin my grammar for them when they spoke. I also never thought I'd be writing a story about guys that spoke like this but there you have it. I'd fallen for their pretty looks but not for their smarts. I actually didn't know how to write like that at first (not that I'm an expert now. Hardly and I hope to never be.) but I think I did well and didn't clutter up their dialog too much with that stuff. It was funny because I was asking some of my friends for advice and they were of no help since I speak to people that also have high quality grammar. Typos are excusable as are slips of the tongue but I hate it when people butcher the English (or any other) Language like that. Another thing I was thinking of allowing into the story for the first time would have been cuss words. I do my best to avoid cuss words since I do pride myself on my good language skills, but these guys are basically a gang of thugs so I figured they would swear. But being that I'd gotten immersed in the Cars universe, fake swears like "Chrysler" and "Scrap" had emerged and there was no need for real swearing. I was very happy about that. I think because of that and only the violence this keeps the story as a PG-13 rating.

The Four Personalities

Boost - Boost is the main character of the story. I'd say he's easily in my top three over all. Boost has a very complex personality that most people find hard to understand. Really he's only in this for himself. Sure he's got his gang but he's not close to them like the others think he is. He put the group together because he wanted the prestige and the power of having others fight with him. After finding out that they weren't reliable, Snot Rod in particular with all his sneezing, and the caused of messed up heists he realizes they are no longer necessary and has no qualms about tossing them all away and finding new and better friends. Most people wouldn't understand how someone could be so cold and uncaring but they are out there and in larger numbers than most people with fool hardy optimistic out looks would like to admit. Boost is a thug and gets his kicks out of breaking and stealing things. But it is more fun and sometimes easier to do these things in a group since the others can cover your six. Despite his flaws Boost is a natural leader. The others are indecisive and he's the one that kept his cool during the crash scene. He's the one that makes the tough decisions when the others can not. The others give him suggestions but in the end it's Boost who calls the shots.

Snot Rod - Some readers might think that Snot Rod was the main character of this story. He plays an important part but he is not. He's merely the object of Boost's rage and you don't see him for most of the story just at the beginning and the end. The name of the story after all is BOOST Exposed. Snot Rod starts off the same way he's portrayed in the movie and games as geeky and dorky. He doesn't seem very smart. Boost blames him for having been caught and forced into community service and wants to kick him out of the gang. The other two, Wingo in particular, take Snot Rod's side and beg Boost to give him a second chance which Boost reluctantly agrees too. But in this story you find out that Snot Rod isn't really geeky or dumb. He just had major problems that held him back like his allergies and his speech impediment. Like most people all he ever wanted was to be accepted and he would try his best to please the other Delinquents, especially Boost. But Boost is hard to please no matter what. Once Doc fixes Snot Rod's problems he changes and becomes a totally different car. He finds the self esteem he'd been lacking and the confidence he needs to not be intimidated by Boost any longer.

Wingo - Wingo is the heart of the group and the most emotional one as well. Challenge the Delinquents and you'd never know this. He'll stand up for his homies. But pick a fight with him alone away from his pals and suddenly Wingo isn't so tough. Wingo draws strength from the group and really can't stand alone. He's a follower. He loves being a Delinquent Road Hazard. Having been accepted into Boost's gang was the best thing that could ever have happened to him. Like Snot Rod he's very loyal to his own and cares about his friends. When they're out smashing stuff up and causing trouble it's the best feeling in the world. But if anything seriously threatens the group Wingo is the first to fall apart as he did when Snot Rod was hit by the train. He panicked and went into a crying fit barely able to speak. The only one able to take action during that tragedy was Boost and he showed why he was the leader of the gang. Wingo's world was completely shattered when Boost broke up the gang and kicked them all out in chapter 5. That was too much for the little Civic. He had to do something anything to keep them together since he felt everything was crashing and burning around him. The things he held most dear were being destroyed and the worst part was that it was because of someone he had cared about and looked up to. Bitting Boost in the spoiler was a mistake and started a really nasty back alley fight. Wingo just wanted to stop him from leaving. He didn't realize he was making a bad situation worse.

DJ - DJ is the one that I developed the least so I won't have much to say about him. He too cares about his friends but he's more stable and independent minded than Wingo is. He's the only one that challenged Boost when things began to go wrong. While Wingo tends to panic on the despair side of things DJ panics by becoming angry and placing blame. He tends to become paranoid as he did when he thought that Boost had set up Snot Rod so he'd be killed by the train and asked which one of them was next. Boost had not of course, but the potential in him to become very bad was in him. That grew over time making DJ's fears not completely unfounded as was shown in the final fight.

As with all my works music played a very important part in the making of this and the main influence was The Offspring. Some of my stories develop soundtracks. This one did though it's a small one. I'll cover the specifics of that on the soundtrack page.
